Boys & Girls Club of Door County is excited to announce its volunteer opportunities for the 2017-2018 school year.
Bus Rider We are in need of a helper to take attendance on the bus that transports our members from Sevastopol & Southern Door schools and model appropriate bus behavior to our members. (M-F, 2:50-3:50pm, Hatch Center)
Garden Helpers to assist with the planning and maintenance of the Boys & Girls Club’s Third Avenue garden. Includes planning, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and maintaining a compost bin.(seasonal, Hatch Center)
Needs Closet Helpers Our Basic Needs Closet is located at the Hatch Center, and contains school supplies, clothing, hygiene items, and more! We are looking for individuals to oversee donations to our Basic Needs Closet and ensure it remains neat and tidy. (As needed; minimum once or twice per month, Hatch Center)
Snack Helpers to assist with daily snack set up and monitoring and tally individuals that take snack each day. Ensure snack is refrigerated as necessary and clean tables between groups. Cover, label, and store leftover snack and stack snack trays to be washed. (M-F, 2:30-4:30pm Hatch Center)
Meal Prep Assistants We serve dinner to our members on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights beginning in October and are in need of helpers to assist our chef in preparing and serving meals according to Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines. Some prior experience with large quantity cooking is helpful as duties may include both hot and cold food preparation. Must be able to stand and move quickly and efficiently with awareness of kitchen safety. (M, W, and/or Th, 2-5:45pm, Hatch Center)
Dish Washers We serve dinner to our members on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights beginning in October and are in need of helpers to run our commercial dishwasher and utilize three bin pot sinks to wash by hand as necessary. Must be able to stand and move quickly and efficiently with awareness of kitchen safety. (M, W, and/or Th, 4:30-6:30pm, Hatch Center)
Club Facilitators If you have an activity you would like to share with our members, we would love to have you! You may only want to share an activity once (that’s great!) or perhaps you’d like to facilitate the activity over 6-8 club sessions and interact with the same group of members each week. We love providing our members with opportunities to learn about many different skills and talents. Let’s figure out how we can share yours! (Days, times, & locations vary)
Program Helpers Have a passion for interacting with kids? We need program helpers to assist our staff in facilitating fun activities for our members. From arts and crafts, to sports in our Rec Center, and more! This is a great way to make connections and get to know our members. (M-F, 3:15-5:30pm,Hatch Center)
Kindergarten Helpers to assist with snack and homework, provide emotional support, and play learning games with our youngest members. Commitment may be once or twice per week, preferably on the same day(s) each week. (M-F, 2:30-5pm, Hatch Center)
Youth Mentors Spend time with members who really benefit from one-on-one time. Read a book together, chat about your day, provide emotional support, be present. This type of interaction makes such a difference in the lives of our members. (M-F, 3:15-4:45pm, Robert Knapp Teen Center at Hatch)
Reading Buddy/Homework Helpers to read one-on-one with members, help with homework, or engage members in skill-building games. Commitment may be once or twice per week, preferably on the same day(s) each week. (M-Th, 4-4:45pm, both Hatch Center and Sawyer site)
Teen Center Mentors Hang out with members in our Teen Center (grades 6-12) and nurture their self-confidence, listen and help them problem-solve, and introduce them to new ideas, activities, and opportunities! Commitment may be once or twice per week, preferably on the same day(s) each week.(M-F, 4-6pm, Robert Knapp Teen Center at Hatch Center)
Teen Kitchen Interns (High School Age) Help in kitchen with food prep as needed 4-5:30, then eat dinner with other teens and return to kitchen to help clean up 6-6:30. No prior kitchen experience is necessary as this position is meant to be a learning experience to familiarize teens with all aspects of commercial kitchen work to list on future work applications and/or to fulfill some or all of high school graduation community service. (M, W, and/or Th 4-5:30, 6-6:30pm, at Hatch Center)
From family events to fundraisers, the Club sponsors numerous events every year. We need your help to make each and every event run smoothly. (Who knows, you might even have a little fun while you’re at it!)
Saturday, September 16 – Old Bolts Car Show, part of Harvest Festival on 3rd Avenue
Saturday, October 28 – Thrills on Third Haunted House at BGC
Monday, November 13 – Thanksgiving Dinner served to all Club members at Hatch Center
Friday, December 8 – Holiday Gift Wrapping
Communications – seeking individuals interested in helping us market the Club and promote it in the community. Responsibilities include oversight of community awareness, branding, and messaging.
Facilities, IT, & Safety – seeking individuals interested in ensuring our club is safe and fully-functioning. Responsibilities include oversight of Club repairs and renovations, recommendation of approaches to IT issues requiring decision-making, developing safe work practices, and conducting workplace self-inspections.
Programming – seeking individuals interested in assessing current programs and vetting new program ideas. Responsibilities include setting long-range program goals and ensuring the Club’s programs meet the needs of our members.
